Community Identity Presentations

On March 18th, after all the hard work produced by the Senior Scholars, teams visited the District Three schools they're collaborating with to create a Brand Identity that suits their current needs.
Scholars and Undergraduate Mentors presented our design proposals for logos to students, faculty, parents and administration and asked for feedback in order to continue the design process during the culminating senior project Community Identity class.

Artist: Jeff Sims

Jeff Sims presented his work to the Parsons Scholars February 19th! 

The scholars were engaged and asked plenty of questions that Jeff was more than happy to answer.

Jeff shared with us, how he got into art and what influences or inspires his work. 

"Well after Jeff Sims' presentation, I was more excited to be in a painting class. I feel that he is different from most artists/painters. I say this because he does a background check on his ideas; geographic subjects are researched then recreated."

Whitney Museum

New Scholars Adventures

On February 12th, Shola's group of Scholars went on a trip to the Whitney Museum of American Art, located at 945 Madison Avenue. The Whitney is a museum consisting of American art of the early 1900s to the present. Unlike typical skyscrapers in Manhattan that get thinner towards the top, the building's designer made the building so that it looks like it defies gravity. The top of the building seems much larger than the ground floor. 

The building's architecture is only a sneak peak of the other artwork inside. Most of the artwork inside is very abstract, having you stand directly in front of the artwork for quite a few minutes to get a real interpretation of what's in front of you. The artwork is displayed in many different ways as films, light displays, paintings, sculptures, clothing, etc. And all of this filled up just five floors! 

There was one piece that I found very interesting of a women made mostly of jars and she was sitting in a chair, the piece is called The Wait by Edward Kienholz. Other artwork that stuck out were of a boxing ring with shoe imprints inside the ring, a film about a man in the desert, and a light display about the World Trade Center. 

Another cool thing about the Whitney is Edward Hopper! He was a famous painter who's work is now displayed at the museum; he painted a portrait of Ms. Whitney herself, the creator of the museum.

Needless to say the trip to the Whitney Museum was very exciting and all of the scholars here at Parsons are very appreciative. Throughout the semester we'll be going to even more cool trips throughout the city, so look out for more!

Create Your Own: SHIRT

The Senior Scholars have felt the commitment of marriage - wedded to the Senior Project and bound to create within the limitations of the project. Their coordinators, Nadia and Ananda, created a workshop that allowed seniors to release their creativity outside of class, allowing their imagination to run wild by creating their own shirts. Either fighting to see who gets which colored shirt or struggling with themselves on what to create, the joyful moment was captured on camera.

Senior Project

We've recently passed the third week into the Senior Project and for those of you not involved, here's an update!

On February 5th, the Seniors were introduced to a Collaboration Project with the Department of Education. The project entitles the seniors along with their instructor, Gigi Polo, to assist the Department of Education in creating a Brand Identity a few schools in for District Three.

Our scholars will be supporting six schools through a transitional period in order to help them re-define their school identities through the creation of logos, mascots, and color schemes which will be designed into brochures, websites, etc. Their designs will help create a more inspiring atmosphere to match these schools' exciting new changes. The Seniors have been working hard and long on the project. So wish them luck (as if they need it) on their long process ahead!
