On Saturday Januray 28^th, our new class of Scholars joined us for the first time during a Parsons Scholars Program orientation.

After receiving more information about the program, the Scholars all participated in a 60-second self-portrait drawing game where they split up into two teams and tried to identify who each portrait belonged to.

The scholars slowly started breaking out of their shells as the game got under way and the game turned competitive. In the end, everyone seemed to have enjoyed themselves and team 2 was declared the winner.

Free Arts NYC and A-List

Free Arts NYC is an organization that provides under-served children and families with a unique combination of educational arts and mentoring programs that help them to foster the self-confidence and resiliency needed to realize their fullest potential. They visited us to offer volunteering places for our junior scholars to start gaining more experience in jobs related with art and community helping.

A-List is an organization that provides SAT/ACT courses and training to schools or any educational institutions. They have come to us to offer classes to our scholars so they can be more prepared for their SAT exams

Information Session: National Portfolio Day!

On Saturday, November 5th the Junior Scholars had their eyes opened to a larger perspective of things - critics. To be more exact, National Portfolio Day. Scholars immediately compared this to the College Fair, but they were soon brought to light by Morgan Ersey (of Parsons Admissions) to the key points and tips of National Portfolio Day.

The Junior Scholars were informed on how their portfolios should be put together, how it should be organized, and more importantly how to get information and constructive feedback from the schools' representatives.

On Sunday, November 13th, the scholars attended the annual National Portfolio Day. The top art and design schools were in attendance along with their prospective students. The art schools that the scholars really wanted to see included Pratt, SUNY Purchase, FIT, SVA, and of course, Parsons. The students were able to get some positive feedback on their work as well as advice and tips to strengthen their portfolios so that the next time around, their portfolios will be stronger then ever.

Horror Films!

Halloween is finally here - a holiday of spooks and frights, however, this day came early for our junior scholars. On the twenty-ninth of October the scholars gathered 'round in room 201 for a small introduction on how to use their fancy HD Video Cameras. After the introduction the scholars were split into 3 groups and given some masks, props, make-up, and a camera. Each of them were sent off to utilize the school as their domain for their film. The scholars went around the school and only had 20 - 30 minutes to create their plot, storyboard, and film. After the scholars were done with their small project they ventured off into the computer labs to edit their films together and create their small horror flick!

On Saturday October 22nd, the scholars attended the Big Apple College Fair. At the fair, the scholars were able to visit a variety of colleges and gain an idea of where they want to study. While following some of the scholars around, I could tell that they really learned a lot about how to ask the right questions when considering schools. Some of the scholars even went around to some schools a second time to get more information. Good job, guys!

The college fair was very busy and people from all over the city were in attendance. Overall, I could tell that the scholars learned a lot about some of the colleges that they were interested in. It was an insightful and fun experience. See you guys on Saturday!

On Saturday the 15th of October, the Scholars continued their research of finding out College and University Facts on CollegeBoard and websites like it. They researched school stats about Eugene Lang College, Parsons and a University or College of their choice. After finding this information, the scholars all participated in Pictionary Game about the College Application Process.

After this game, the scholars were introduced to a project they would be working on throughout their Semester, a social media project that they would develop to inform their peers on information about the College process, the ideas that they brainstormed were great.

Saturday was a very educational day for high school students from all over the city. They had the chance to learn about Parsons Admission, the Parsons Challenge and how to organized their portfolio for college. Students were able to brainstorm ideas for their Parsons Challenge and to get feedback on them. They had the opportunity to speak to experts about any concern they had and also were able to socialize with other students with the same interests as their own.
What a productive day!!!!

Its the second week here at Parsons. The Juniors are learning and preparing for College with the help of crossword puzzles and a presentation by Nadia Williams. The Juniors were introduced to their new best friend, College Board. They were able to start their first search based on their general interests. Exploring the world of College Board through given assignments by their Coordinators Shola and Yashua. Have fun with your research guys!

Our scholars are back! Getting together again for their classes on Saturday and working hard as always, but enjoying it as well. Besides enjoying their classes the students met once again at 2W 13th Street's 4th floor (Common Room) and gobbled their traditional Saturday pizza. Gobbling and catching up with one another the scholars enjoyed their lunch and were introduced to their mentors. Eventually the scholars broke off into their different groups and both went to different workshops. Stacy's group went to a College Admissions Workshop with Morgan - who spoke about different aspects of applying to Parsons. He also provided them with insight on how to tackle the Parsons Challenge. Whereas Yashua and Shola's scholars went to see a presentation on Groundswell by Tanya Frable who spoke to the scholars about this amazing opportunity and the meaning of murals in New York City. The scholars have had their eyes opened to these new opportunities - now its only time to see how far they'll take them.

Congratulations to all the scholars for 2011. Y'all did great and it was a great night to see everybody gathered up together and commemorate all your wonderful achievements.

From the wonderful talk from guest speaker Jeff Ng of Staple Design, to the speeches from the great coordinators; Nadia & Ananda, to the wonderful recollection of memories of the scholars, a wonderful evening.

Thanks again to Anne Gaines and the rest of the faculty who helped put such a wonderful ceremony together. Wishing all the Scholars a good first year in their respective colleges.

Storm King field trip!

At the end of the Spring semester, the entire Parsons Scholars program took a day trip upstate to the breathtaking Storm King Art Center.

Although the May sky threatened us with a Spring shower, it held out for a great day of exploring this impressive collection of large-scale sculptures in an inspiring setting.

At "The Kitchen" in Chelsea scholars met the artist, Kenya (Robinson), featured in the gallery. She spoke of her featured work, Kenya Eats A Cracker.

On this rainy day, the scholars walked from The New School to the gallery.

Robinson's work raised many questions for the scholars about race and how it relates to her work.

Richard Pean: Talenthouse movie poster winner!

Our very own Richard Pean (Undergrad Mentor and Scholar alum) recently won a Movie Poster Design Competition on Talenthouse, which is a platform that provides opportunities for creatives to "participate in unique projects with artists and brands, collaborate, gain recognition and compensation."

For his winning poster design, Richard will attend the film premiere in London or LA (travel and accommodation provided!) and work closely with the production team to create the official film poster.

Chris Soria Visits Scholars!

On Saturday April 16, artist Chris Soria met with Senior Scholars to share his work and to discuss his process with students.

Students were impressed at the wide range of work Chris does: including collaborative large-scale murals, illustration,photo collage, pumpkin carving and more!
It was great to meet an example of someone who finds a way to divide his time between a wide range of interests-- all while making a living doing (many) things he loves.

Visit to Stony Brook University

On Tuesday April 26th, Mei Yue Luo and her coordinator Nadia enjoyed the last day of Spring Break by taking a tour of SUNY Stony Brook University (where Mei has been accepted!) in Long Island.

It was a beautiful day, and Mei received a lot of information to help her make an informed decision of where she'll be attending next year.

Since most colleges require students to respond to their letters of acceptance with a reply by May 1, this is a week full of balancing options, comparing financial aid packages and evaluating program quality-- one last time.

Good luck to all of our seniors with their (well-informed) decisions!

Mensen joined Scholars April 2nd to present her work and create a comic with the us. It was an awesome experience and we all learned a lot - from Feminism to using art to make political statements.

Mensen also gave the Scholars the task of creating a comic - together! Each Scholar drew a panel and then passed it around and the process continued. It was great to complete these comics and decipher what each Scholar was trying to express in their panel.

After the presentation the students ended their day with the Union Sq pillow fight. It was a perfect ending to a great day!

It's an understatement to say that our seniors have been working hard all year-- balancing college applications, maintaining good grades in school, and attending our Saturday program and monthly meetings, among other extra-curricular activities.But, believe it or not, we've managed to have fun along theway.. Yashua and Shola's Scholars welcomed Hank Willis Thomas to their Saturday Program March 5th.

Laniqua Sprull said, "While viewing the artitst's work many of us took on the analyzation that his work was based on racism. Listening to the feedback of the work made us finally understand the purpose of finally telling what the titles actually meant."

Leonard Cintron said, "Hank Willis Thomas let the viewers know that just about anything can be racist and most things in the present have something to do with the past."

Other Scholars commented on Hank Willis Thomas' work.

Roxana Sana said, "I liked the way the same person is looked upon differently depending on what they wore."

Raquel Castillo said, "The way you dress yourself can determing the way people think of you when they first meet you which can be something good or bad for you."

Ashlie Juanita Baptiste said, "I loved the way he incorporated himself in most of his pieces. It shows that he is a part of the experience."

Forbes Galleries Visit!

Shola's group of Scholars participated in a mini scavenger hunt during their visit to Forbes Galleries February 26th. They were broken up into groups and asked to work together. Not only did they learn about Forbes Galleries being a home to Forbes Magazine but they learned about the various exhibits and artists there.

Juan Peña Parsons Scholars 2011 said "Forbes Galleries has great paintings, jewelry, and drawings. I had a good time with my classmates searching for stuff in the galleries."

Scholars go to the Museum of the Moving Image!

Parsons Scholars seniors had a tour with the Museum of the Moving Image on March 26th.
It was a fun time where the scholars were able to relax a little and enjoy the afternoon.

Some activities that the students were able to participate in were playing the first video game ever created, as well as virtual reality videos, light sculptures, interactive pieces and other mediums.

Community Identity Presentations

On March 18th, after all the hard work produced by the Senior Scholars, teams visited the District Three schools they're collaborating with to create a Brand Identity that suits their current needs.

Scholars and Undergraduate Mentors presented our design proposals for logos to students, faculty, parents and administration and asked for feedback in order to continue the design process during the culminating senior project Community Identity class.

Jeff Sims presented his work to the Parsons Scholars February 19th!

The scholars were engaged and asked plenty of questions that Jeff was more than happy to answer.

Jeff shared with us, how he got into art and what influences or inspires his work.

"Well after Jeff Sims' presentation, I was more excited to be in a painting class. I feel that he is different from most artists/painters. I say this because he does a background check on his ideas; geographic subjects are researched then recreated."

Whitney Museum

New Scholars Adventures

On February 12th, Shola's group of Scholars went on a trip to the Whitney Museum of American Art, located at 945 Madison Avenue. The Whitney is a museum consisting of American art of the early 1900s to the present. Unlike typical skyscrapers in Manhattan that get thinner towards the top, the building's designer made the building so that it looks like it defies gravity. The top of the building seems much larger than the ground floor.

The building's architecture is only a sneak peak of the other artwork inside. Most of the artwork inside is very abstract, having you stand directly in front of the artwork for quite a few minutes to get a real interpretation of what's in front of you. The artwork is displayed in many different ways as films, light displays, paintings, sculptures, clothing, etc. And all of this filled up just five floors!

There was one piece that I found very interesting of a women made mostly of jars and she was sitting in a chair, the piece is called The Wait by Edward Kienholz. Other artwork that stuck out were of a boxing ring with shoe imprints inside the ring, a film about a man in the desert, and a light display about the World Trade Center.

Another cool thing about the Whitney is Edward Hopper! He was a famous painter who's work is now displayed at the museum; he painted a portrait of Ms. Whitney herself, the creator of the museum.

Needless to say the trip to the Whitney Museum was very exciting and all of the scholars here at Parsons are very appreciative. Throughout the semester we'll be going to even more cool trips throughout the city, so look out for more!

Create Your Own: SHIRT

The Senior Scholars have felt the commitment of marriage - wedded to the Senior Project and bound to create within the limitations of the project. Their coordinators, Nadia and Ananda, created a workshop that allowed seniors to release their creativity outside of class, allowing their imagination to run wild by creating their own shirts. Either fighting to see who gets which colored shirt or struggling with themselves on what to create, the joyful moment was captured on camera.

Senior Project

We've recently passed the third week into the Senior Project and for those of you not involved, here's an update!

On February 5th, the Seniors were introduced to a Collaboration Project with the Department of Education. The project entitles the seniors along with their instructor, Gigi Polo, to assist the Department of Education in creating a Brand Identity a few schools in for District Three.

Our scholars will be supporting six schools through a transitional period in order to help them re-define their school identities through the creation of logos, mascots, and color schemes which will be designed into brochures, websites, etc. Their designs will help create a more inspiring atmosphere to match these schools' exciting new changes. The Seniors have been working hard and long on the project. So wish them luck (as if they need it) on their long process ahead!

Super Sabado!

On Saturday February 19th, the senior Scholars braved the cold to join in the festivities uptown at El Museo del Barrio.

Dedicated to Latino art, El Museo hosts a monthly event, Super Sabado, which celebrated the upcoming carnaval with concerts and workshops, free to the public.

After contemplating the meaning behind the artwork of conceptual Uruguayan artist Luis Camnitzer, our scholars enjoyed musical performances that celebrated the African roots of Puerto Rican, Dominican and Haitian culture through dance and percussion. What a great day of group bonding and unwinding from senior stress!

We kicked off the new semester of the Academy with so many exciting things! New sophomore Scholars, the last semester for senior Scholars, a new senior project, and the winners of the big trip to Paris! Looks like its going to be a great spring!

2nd Annual Parsons Scholars Reunion

We celebrated the semesters end with the 2nd Annual Parsons Scholars Reunion. Alumni, Current scholars, Coordinators and Mentors celebrated their achievements and hard work during the past year.

Documenting Student Work

This week, seniors took lesson from Ananda on ways in which to document and photograph their artwork (large scale works and sketchbook works) for their portfolios
Coordinators and Mentors assisted scholars in taking superb photographs using tripods, hot lights and digital SLR cameras. Scholars learned to shoot their own work accounting for lighting, zoom, focus and composition.

After the photographs were taken, Mentors assisted scholars noticing whether the photos were in focus or not, making proper re-shoots if not. The photos were uploaded on a portable drive, on its way to being photoshopped for next weeks workshop.

National Portfolio Day

Scholars headed up to Lehman College in the Bronx for National Portfolio Day on Saturday November 20, spending the day visiting representatives from the colleges they're interested in.

The seniors received great feedback from Admissions reps, allowing them to improve their portfolios before submitting officially over the next few months.

After Saturday morning's class, Seniors in the Parsons Scholars program gathered all of their artwork to review in groups with their Coordinator, College Mentors and peers.

Each student gained important feedback regarding what and how to present during a portfolio review at the upcoming National Portfolio Day.

SVA Tour

On Election Day, Parsons Scholar Seniors toured the School of Visual Arts' facilities.

Students learned about SVA programs and application requirements and were able to speak to current undergrad students about their experiences. All very important information to bring the application process to life!

On October 12th, the scholars attended the Cooper Hewitt Teen Design Fair, which gives high schools students the opportunity to meet and speak with professional artists and designers from around the world. This year was extra special... not only were there more artists than ever before but they catered the event and treated the students to every kind of yummy food you could imagine... oh ya and of course Tim Gunn was the key note speaker!

College Essay Workshop 2

The Scholars continued with part 2 of the College Essay Workshop conducted by Jesse Day on Saturday October 23. The class critiqued sample essays to hone their constructive feedback skills. Scholars worked in groups sharing their individual personal statements led by mentors and coordinators. Students used constructive feedback to improve each others personal college essays utilizing their terms and techniques discussed during the workshop.

The first of a two week workshop for Seniors on effective college essay writing. Conducted by Jesse Day, a Parsons faculty for The Writing Center and Critical Reading & Writing class, the workshop focused on captivating the reader with interesting introduction sentences, HOOKs, and analyzing different strategies in writing personal college essays.

Current Parsons Undergrads guide the Scholars as College Mentors in small discussion groups.

Rising Seniors in the Scholars program are working hard in the Summer Intensive Studies program which is a 96-hour course taking place from June 28 through July 23.

Scholars are enrolled in the class that best suits their needs and interests, with a variety of classes to choose from including Architecture, Game Design, Fashion Design, Drawing & Painting, Design & Management and Illustration.

Upon successful completion of the course, students receive college credits, which—in addition to the time management skills they are gaining—will give them a head start in college next Fall.

Returning to Brookdale hospital this past Saturday, the class sketched their new concepts onto their walls and some even began to paint them! More patients and parents stood in the hallway and watched as everyone worked on their walls. One particular parent stopped by each mural and said "You guys are gooood".

After reviewing the work/sketches done for the walls at Brookdale, some issues arose but the class was able to "go back to the drawing board" to create original and unique illustrations. We spent a day back at Parsons and turned out some new and even better resolutions for our concepts. Towards the end of class, we critiqued each others work.

Global Kids Annual Youth Conference on Children's Rights

On Friday, April 9, 2010 Parsons Scholar Jessy Jo Gomez (below, center) was one of three student leaders to emcee the Global Kids’ 21st Annual Youth Conference, entitled “Got To Have My Rights”.

The youth-organized event brought together over 500 diverse youth from over 50 high schools across NYC to learn about and take action on children’s rights.

The event included several exciting guest speakers including actress and activist Rosario Dawson and over 30 workshops developed and facilitated by participating students around topics such as Access to Education, Child Abuse and Neglect, Child Labor, Child Soldiers, Human Trafficking, Impact of War on Children, Juvenile Justice, Sexual Exploitation of Children, Standard of Living, and more.

At the event, participating youth also presented a petition urging Congress to ratify the UN Convetion on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).

Congratulations to Jessy Jo for continuing to display such strong leadership skills. You demonstrate that there’s no need to wait until you’re older to start making important social changes!

First work day at Brookdale hospital!

Jaime's illustration class has been given the great opportunity to create several murals for the Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn, NY.
Our first steps took place in Parsons where the class created their sketches and later painted them. (Look for the images under the "Brookdale hospital mural project" link).
After visiting the hospital for the first time and returning this past weekend, we had a better sense of how much work was to be placed onto the murals. Most importantly, we realized how much this meant for the patients who watched the whole day as the students sketched their concepts onto the walls.

Pulse Contemporary Art Fair

On Sunday, March 7th, Parsons Scholars enthusiastically joined artists, art dealers, and collectors from all over the world at the Pulse Contemporary Art Fair. After meeting at Parsons, the Scholars, Ananda, and Joelle ventured downtown to West Houston to spend a couple hours exploring a multitude of exhibitions at the annual fair. The Scholars had a great opportunity to see not just new and fascinating art and artists and gain inspiration, but to observe firsthand the way the fine arts world works.

Saturday Academy Classes

Each Saturday morning, Parsons Scholars join students from the greater NYC area for art and design classes in their areas of interest as students in the Pre-College Academy program.

Here, students work on this week's task in their Graphic Design class taught by graphic designer/artist/Parsons adjunct professor Steven Kennedy.

This week's assignment:

Teams of 2 students had 2 hours to design & produce a 3-dimensional object, to be presented with a design statement. Each team was given 15 pieces of 6x10" card stock and a penalty was issued for for not using all 15 pieces.

On Saturday Febrary 27, after their morning art/design class, Parsons Scholars Juniors prepared for their upcoming 8-week SAT prep course with a diagnostic test.

The course will be given by A-List, which was founded in 2005 by Ivy League graduates who believe in establishing a unique brand of teaching through dynamic educational services.

A-List works closely with local community organizations and nationally recognized nonprofit organizations such as the Boys & Girls Club, Graham-Windham, the Harlem Children's Zone and Year Up. They have also worked with students from all over the North Eastern United States and also from as far afield as London, Paris, and Hong Kong.

We look forward to an exciting and productive semester with great results!

College Visit: Fashion Institute of Technology

On Wed. February 17, Ananda and Nadia took Junior Scholars on a college visit to F.I.T. in Manhattan.

The day began with an information session, continued with a self-guided tour of on-campus resources, and concluded with a tour of on-campus housing.

Two main observations made by students:

1. F.I.T. offers several majors other than Fashion Design

2. It offers direct-entry programs, demanding students to choose areas of interest before applying.

The students proved their dedication to their college research by waking up early during their chilly Winter Break to attend this Info Session!

Financial aid workshop for scholars+parents

On Saturday February 20th, Alison Palmer of New Settlement conducted a Financial Aid workshop for Junior Scholars and their parents outlining the specifics of what they should understand and expect before and after filling out the FAFSA.

Scholars, all the information is in the folder. Save the black folder! Students and parents took the opportunity to ask the invited expert their questions, and experienced parents and Undergraduate Mentors shared their insight with the group. With a great parent turn-out, the workshop was a success, signalling a strong start to the juniors' college application process.

Trapped in an Elevator!

The MOMA: Tim Burton

On January 3oth Nadia's scholars along with some of Ananda's new scholars, went to see the Tim Burton exhibition at the MOMA. It was packed but the students were able to see the life's work of such a prolific and awesome artist. Not only did students get to see the art that Burton was making in high school but they also got to see his black light art, clay sculptures, videos, props from his movies, hundreds of drawings and much much more!

Senior Project Preview!

This weekend Jaime Arredondo and Jessica Cannon met with Josh Fifer from Helping Is Easy at Brookdale Hospital's Pediatric Unit. We had a great time touring the space and learning about the need for various art and design projects to transform hospital spaces that are used by young patients and their families.

Under the guidance of faculty and experienced mural artist Jaime Arredondo, senior scholars will work to create a series of collaborative pieces for the young patients at Brookdale. Purchase Visit with Guillermo

On January 27th Guillermo Restrepo and Jessica Cannon took a field trip to tour the Fine Arts Department at Purchase College in White Plains, NY. Guillermo was really excited about Purchase from the fine arts facilities to the suburban campus a short train ride from the city. Purchase also has an internationally recognized museum on campus (The Neuberger), and a large collection of student work installed at the school. Fun fact: There is an historic graveyard in the middle of campus!

On Saturday, December 12 the junior scholars had a workshop given by their coordinator, Nadia Williams, to begin to demystify the many elements of the college application process.

Learning about this process a year in advance will give the Scholars the insight necessary to stay focused and organized when they are seniors.

Above, Scholars discuss the many elements they think make-up the application process while TA's Yelaine Rodriguez and Luis Baez try to keep-up with their many ideas.
After the group brainstorm, Scholars worked in small groups to place these steps in order to the best of their knowledge.

Once finished, each group's order was reviewed by all, clarifying confusing elements of the process while discussing corrections.

Everyone had fun collaborating , and all were eager to learn more about this elaborate process. Congratulations to group #3 (Deana, Saradyn, Nelson and Mei) for creating the most effective application process!

Gowanus Studio Space Visit with Stacy Seiler

On Saturday, November 21st, artist Stacy Seiler shared her workspace at the Gowanus Studio Space with the junior Scholars.

The Gowanus Studio offers space, equipment and much-needed support to emerging designers, artists and craftspeople with hopes of generating collaboration between these areas. The Studio houses a large industrial arts workshop as well as private studio and exhibition space.

Above, Stacy explains her meticulous work process from her personal content research to her tedious techniques. Students were given the chance to ask the artist about technique specifics and her source of inspiration.

The scholars all know Stacy as an Academy instructor and Scholars Coordinator, so this was a great opportunity to learn more about her work as an artist. Everyone was in awe of Stacy's persistence in creating such an impressive body of work!

We were also fortunate enough to have the opportunity to speak with Ian, who attended undergrad with Stacy at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. Ian spoke about his experience as a Creative Director and showed us samples of the work he creates for clients, demonstrating to the Scholars yet another way in which they can build a career with their creative abilities.

Located in the historically industrial neighborhood along the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, The Gowanus Studio Space aims to establish an arts resource for the surrounding community.

Animation Workshop

On Saturday Dec.5th, Junior Scholars were treated to an Animation workshop with professional Animators Nina Frenkel and Ru Kuwahata. We were very lucky to have such talented artists explain this exciting field to us with an engaging and inspiring presentation/workshop!

The workshop began with an overview of what Animation is and its history:

Here, Ru explains her work process with the company she co-founded, Tiny Inventions.

Ru shared some of the characters and objects she crafts by hand,

and showed us how she and her partner Max (shown below) bring these objects to life through Animation.

And finally, Nina walked students through an introductory exercise on Adobe Flash, giving them a chance to apply a what they learned today!
The scholars left this workshop with a strong understanding of what Animation is, and what kind of careers are available in this area.

National Portfolio Day

On Saturday, November 14th, Parsons Scholars attended National Portfolio Day-- hosted by Pratt this year. This event is an opportunity for students interested in pursuing an education in the visual arts and design to meet with representatives from colleges accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

Representatives from each school are available to review students' artwork, discuss their programs and answer questions about professional careers in art.

Students gain invaluable input from college reps regarding the portfolio portion of their college applications.

Senior scholars in attendance will build on feedback from their particular schools of interest before officially submitting their portfolios, while junior scholars are given the opportunity to have their work reviewed a year in advance while exploring different program options in order to be prepared for the upcoming application process.

Working Hard to Make it to India!

Nick Savvides, Parsons Scholar Alum (class of 2009 from Long Island City HS, Queens) is now studying Architecture as a freshman at Cornell. Nick has had a great experience so far, and can already see how his studies relate directly to making an impact on his community back in NYC.
He now has the opportunity to travel to India over Winter break, which will be an invaluable addition to his college experience.

On Saturday, October 10, the coordinator of the 2011 Scholars, Nadia Williams, gave a presentation to her group on the non-profit organization, Fabrica Social, which she co-found. The Mexican nonprofit organization aims to empower groups of indigenous female artisans and thus improve their quality of life by providing them with sustainable design skills that complement their traditional artisan techniques. The goal is to preserve the traditional techniques while creating new designs, allowing the artisans to create a living independently. www.fabricasocial.wordpress.com

Supplies for Classes for Jes' and Ananda's Groups

So, a few things.

1. For each Portfolio Prep class, you will need to fix your work with spray fixative. So everyone doesn't have to lug a can around, there are two Scholars in each class who will hold onto the can and make it available for you to use. Before you leave school everyday, you should find one of these folks and spray down your work so it doesn't get all smudged!

2. Some classes will be using black and white acrylic and gesso. In the office, in the room Tanya's usually in, there will be a box with black and white acrylic and gesso as well as containers and palette knives. Go ahead and scoop out as much as you need; that way there's always paint here for you. If your teacher requires additional specific colors, please email Tanya at frabt072@newschool.edu as soon as you know so she can have them ready for you!

Saturday, October 3, was the first day of pre-college classes for fall and all scholars and mentors attended a time management and organization workshop lead by Parsons faculty Stacy Seiler.

The first activity of the workshop was a race to finish a task list. The scholars were quite surprised at the end of the activity when they realized the last task on their 'to do' list was that they could pass over all of the previous 10 steps (getting a blade of grass, organizing skittles by color, drawing portraits of friends, etc.) and sit down and say finished. Senior Sundiata Guerra read through his entire task list, realized he didn't need to do any of the activities and stated 'finished' while his peers ran around gathering grass and following the list. Sundiata won some organization tools and everyone had a good time, a great laugh and learned a lot. To close the event scholars organized their week(s) and month(s) at a glance on a calendar, and realized just how little free time they have and how valuable it is! This was a great first step towards college applications for our seniors!

Two Articles about the High Bridge Project!

A great article in Inhabitat about the High Bridge Project done by the Parsons Scholars in Spring 2009. This article has really impressive profiles of the students and their design solutions!

In a continued effort to offer Parsons Scholars hands-on professional experience, the spring 2009 semester brought together the graduating Scholars to embark on their first internship involving an architecture design team effort that hoped would benefit the community and re-invigorate city parkland. With the guidance of faculty member Nick Brinen, the Scholars devoted their regular Saturday class time to visualizing the re-opening of the High Bridge, New York City’s oldest span of the Croton Aqueduct, that connects Manhattan and the Bronx via a pedestrian footbridge. Mr. Brinen, an architectural designer in New York City and founder of LIGHTSHED, studied architecture at the University of Florida, later receiving his M.Arch with specialization in Sustainable Design at the University of Texas at Austin.

The Scholars expressed genuine excitement as they recognized the scope of the project and realized that their efforts would directly benefit their own community. During the semester Scholars worked side by side with Architecture for Humanity New York (AFHny), interacting with the High Bridge community, exploring the latest technologies in two and three-dimensional representations and meeting with guest lecturers from renowned architecture and urban planning firms such as Polshek Partnership Architects.

This summer, the rising juniors in our Scholars Program attended Parsons Pre-College Academy two week intensive from August 3 - 14. This was the scholars second semester at Parsons, and they all worked individually with their coordinator, Nadia Williams, to select a course that would support their goals and also be of great interest to each scholar!

This July, 22 rising seniors in high school took Summer Intensive Studies for college credit. The program ran June 30 - July 24, and the students were in class from 9am to 4pm, Monday - Friday, for four weeks. Upon completion of this course, students had earned four college credits! This course exposes the students to actual college experiences and they all met friends from all of the world in their classes this summer.
